Comparison and Analysis (CASE STUDY 1)

[HONG KONG ARTICLE] Campus clashes as universities become new battleground in Hong Kong anti-government unrest

[SINGAPORE ARTICLE] Little India Riot: 18 injured, 27 arrested

Both reports show how Singapore and Hong Kong report differently about the riots in their own country.

Firstly, in this case, we will be comparing Singapore newspaper article, Today, and Hong Kong newspaper article, South China Morning Post.

Next, we will be comparing the Singapore newspaper article, The Straits Times, with the same piece of Hong Kong newspaper article.

In conclusion, it can be seen that the Hong Kong newspaper article, South China Morning Post, provides a balanced view from both the police and protestors as their actions of resorting to violence are being justified by both parties through testimonies. However, readers will not be able to tell from this report which party is the aggressor of the situation, which rules out the possibility that the report is trying to cover up the truth behind this incident by providing readers with a balanced view instead of putting the blame on any of the party.

As for the Singapore newspaper article, Today, it is biased towards the law enforcement personnel as the crowd is being portrayed as the aggressor of the riot and their actions were deemed as “lawless behaviour” according to Singapore law, which means it is not acceptable. Thus, it can be clearly seen that the report is siding towards the law enforcement personnel, given the fact that there was no testimony from the crowd to allow readers to understand from their side their reasons for attacking.

The Straits Times, is also biased towards the government and this is due to the fact that Singapore media works closely with the government and thus, they will not portray a negative image of the government. Thus, it is seen that most of the content is in favour of the police.
